Alexia Katsiginis

Alexia Katsiginis is a PhD candidate at Sciences Po Law School, under the supervision of Professor Helena Alviar. She has a master’s degree in Public International Law from the London School of Economic and Political Sciences, and a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Pretoria.

Alexia is the main instructor for an undergraduate course on critical theory and international law at the Sciences Po Paris campus and a teaching assistant to Helena Alviar for a master’s course on anti-discrimination. She is also a tutor at the Sciences Po Law School Clinic for the Human rights, Economic Development and Globalization (HEDG) programme on Housing with the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing.

Her PhD broadly focuses on the relationship between human rights and emotions, and draws on CLS, TWAIL, and affect theory. Her research explores the role of affects in producing a particular knowledge about suffering through legal texts. It considers how the affective arrangements of human rights reinforce neoliberal ideological structures and prevent the discourse from meaningfully responding to the structural conditions that give rise to human rights abuses.

Previously, Alexia has worked as a legal researcher to the Inspecting Judge at the Inspectorate for Prisons in South Africa, where she conducted research on penal reform and prison abolition. She also worked at the Centre for Human Rights (Pretoria) as a project coordinator for a constitutional rights education project and as a legal researcher to the former UN Special Rapporteur on extra-judicial killings, summary or arbitrary executions.
